He describes Interfold as a general implementation of the MACCI (Minimum Anti-Complicity Infrastructure) concept, which he has repeatedly advocated for over a decade. Essentially, the project is a privacy protocol optimized for scenarios like voting and secret auctions, aiming to raise awareness and understanding of this technological advancement. Buterin further explains that Interfold's core mechanisms include generating threshold encryption keys, users submitting votes with ZKP eligibility on-chain, and threshold decryption after arbitrary computation in Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). This provides strong security guarantees such as unconditional voter anonymity, Ethereum-level censorship resistance, and ZK over FHE ensuring result correctness. Currently, the main limitation is the high cost of complex computations (such as multiplication), with only addition-based vote counting being mature. Optimizations such as slashing-based methods are underway, with the long-term goal of implementing obfuscation technology to eliminate reliance on M-of-N committees.
