The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to impose import restrictions on Chinese optical transceivers (used for high-speed fiber optic data transmission in data centers) and hopes to announce the measures by the end of this year. Neither the White House nor the FCC has responded to requests for comment.

If the U.S. bans imports of new data center equipment from China, it could increase costs for U.S. cloud computing companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS) (AMZN.O), forcing them to turn to other suppliers, such as U.S.-based Coherent (COHR.N) and Lumentum (LITE.O). Existing products from companies like InnoLight and Eoptolink that have already obtained FCC certification and are being sold in the US are not subject to the restrictions. The controls prohibit US companies from directly importing new Chinese data center optical components, but do not prohibit Chinese companies from building factories overseas to supply these components.
