Decentralized finance protocol Lombard has become the latest project to join the migration wave, announcing it will gradually abandon LayerZero and migrate over $1 billion in Bitcoin collateralized assets to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP). Lombard's Bitcoin-related tokens include LBTC and BTC.b. According to an article by Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, US inflation is accelerating and energy prices are rising significantly, suggesting that new Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh will have to maintain high interest rates. The market generally expects the Fed not to cut rates before September 2027. This "long-term high-interest-rate" policy has three major impacts on crypto assets: 1. Pressure on "currency devaluation trading": The cost of holding non-interest-bearing assets like Bitcoin is rising, and high real interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding zero-yield alternatives, putting short-term pressure on assets like Bitcoin. However, Pandl remains optimistic about Bitcoin's prospects, expecting positive regulatory developments, including the CLARITY Act, to offset some of the negative impacts. 2. Accelerated on-chaining of fixed-income assets: The yields of USD-denominated fixed-income products are generally higher than similar DeFi products. If crypto investors obtain higher yields on tokenized bonds, issuers may push for more assets to be on-chain, promoting the digitization of fixed income. 3. Increased revenue for stablecoin issuers: Stablecoin issuers like Circle hold interest-bearing assets but cannot pay interest to tokens. Rising interest rates directly boost Circle's revenue; Pandl estimates that a 25 basis point increase in short-term interest rates could increase Circle's revenue by approximately $190 million. Zach Pandl concludes that prolonged high interest rates will hinder "currency devaluation trades," while simultaneously driving the tokenization of fixed-income assets and increasing stablecoin issuers' profits.
