Quick Take

1. Privacy is the only crypto sector trading above its level at Bitcoin’s October 2025 all-time high, up 213% per Glassnode data, while Bitcoin itself sits 36% below that peak.

2. The sector’s market capitalization has grown from $7.1 billion a year ago to $33.6 billion, with nearly half of that added in the past 30 days.

3. Concentration is the caveat: Zcash accounts for most of the gain, and Monero at $505.68 is roughly flat on the week while ZEC ran 47%.

More than 335 days after Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak, one crypto sector is trading above where it stood at the top. Privacy coins are up 213% since that high, according to Glassnode data, while every other category remains below it, ranging from DeFi at 27% lower to gaming at 74% lower. Bitcoin is 36% below its own record and the median top-200 asset is down 58%.

This site began tracking the privacy rotation on July 8, when Zcash traded at $469.57 and was the only large-cap rising against a falling market. What was then an anomaly in one token has become the defining sector trade of 2026.

What is driving the privacy coin rally?

Regulated access, a supply story, and a rotation that fed on itself.

Regulated access came first. For a decade, privacy assets were removed from regulated venues rather than added to them. Grayscale’s spot Zcash product listed on NYSE Arca on August 25 and has gathered roughly $463 million in assets since. That is a structural change in who can hold the asset, not a sentiment shift.

The supply argument is Bitcoin’s own. Zcash shares Bitcoin’s 21 million cap, its proof-of-work security and its halving schedule, with roughly 16.86 million coins circulating. The bull case has always compressed into one claim: an asset with Bitcoin’s emission discipline plus privacy should not trade at a fraction of a percent of Bitcoin’s price. That ratio has closed sharply this year.

The rotation broadened, then narrowed again. After Zcash’s initial run, capital hunted down the shelf. This site covered Zano when it topped the most-viewed list and Zama, an encryption infrastructure project, when it entered the trending list weeks later. Both were beneficiaries of attention that Zcash created.

Is the whole sector rising, or just Zcash?

Mostly Zcash, and that distinction matters for anyone treating this as a sector trade.

Zcash has gained roughly 2,500% across 2026 and drives most of the sector’s market capitalization growth. On the current tape, ZEC is up 47.05% on the week at $1,223.52 while Monero , the sector’s second-largest asset, trades at $505.68 and is down 0.35% over the same period. Zano gained 12.79% on the day but is 6.01% lower on the week.

A sector index rises when its largest constituent rises, which can disguise the fact that most of its members are not participating. That is the situation here. Buying “privacy” as a theme right now largely means buying Zcash, and anyone diversifying across the sector to reduce risk may be diluting the exposure that produced the returns rather than spreading it.

Why is Monero not keeping pace?

Access, in a word. The two coins answer different questions and the market is currently paying for one of them.

Monero hides sender, receiver and amount on every transaction by default, which makes it the stronger privacy tool and the harder asset to list on a regulated venue. Zcash’s shielded transactions are optional, which weakens its anonymity set but gives exchanges a workable compliance answer.

This site’s comparison of the two scored Zcash ahead on access and regulatory exposure while giving Monero the rounds on privacy and track record, and argued the sector’s real dividing line was permission rather than cryptography. The ETF flows since have made that concrete: the coin that can be wrapped in a US-listed product is the one attracting institutional capital, regardless of which offers better privacy.

Is this rally sustainable?

The flows are, the mechanics are less so, and the regulation is a separate question with a date on it.

Short liquidations have been a large component of recent moves, with ZEC recording roughly $45.32 million in a single day, per CoinGlass . Forced buying from closed short positions is real demand with a fixed fuel supply; it stops when the shorts are gone and it stops abruptly. ETF inflows can persist in a way liquidations cannot, which makes ZCSH’s asset growth the number worth following rather than the daily candle.

The regulatory risk has not moved and does not respect technical levels. The European Union’s anti-money-laundering framework is set to restrict anonymity-enhancing tokens at regulated providers from July 1, 2027, with the legislative text available through EUR-Lex . That applies to a bloc rather than a single exchange, a US listing does not bind European regulators, and Monero carries more exposure to it than Zcash because privacy that cannot be switched off cannot be made compliant on request.

What would change the picture?

Two things, one on each side.

If ZCSH inflows continue at anything close to their launch pace and other issuers file competing products, the access thesis strengthens and the sector’s repricing has further to run. If inflows stall while short interest is already cleared, the mechanical bid disappears and a sector that has run 213% has a long way to give back.

On the regulatory side, the shape of the EU implementation as July 2027 approaches is the single largest variable. If the rules target anonymity-enhancing technology broadly rather than non-disclosable privacy specifically, Zcash’s central advantage evaporates and its premium becomes a liability.

Bottom line

Privacy is the only crypto sector trading above its level at Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak, up 213% while every other category sits below it, but the gain is concentrated in Zcash rather than spread across the sector.

The trade that worked in 2026 was not “privacy.” It was the privacy asset that regulators would tolerate and an ETF could hold. That is a narrower thesis than the sector chart suggests, and it has a date in 2027 attached to it.
