The team behind Zakura, a Zcash node launched in July, has released Zakura Common, a collection of cryptography libraries that cuts the time wallets spend constructing private transactions, according to the project’s announcement . The release is part of a broader push to make the privacy-focused blockchain fast enough for everyday payments, and the team calls the optimizations among the most significant in Zcash’s history.

Benchmarks Behind the Speedup

Private Zcash transactions hide the sender, receiver and amount, so a wallet must perform substantial cryptographic work before a payment can even be sent. Zakura says Zakura Common makes mobile proof generation more than 14 times faster, desktop generation more than five times faster, Sinsemilla hashing more than 21 times faster and zk-SNARK verification between four and eight times faster. Users who once waited more than three seconds can now wait under 200 milliseconds in many cases. In scaling discussions the project often cites sub-second confirmation goals, but every user today still spends those seconds waiting for a wallet to create a transaction.

Adoption Without a Network Upgrade

The improvements do not require an upgrade to Zcash itself. Wallet developers can adopt the open-source libraries, released under the MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses, on the network as it exists today. The team said the gains did not come from one large optimization: once one component speeds up, another serial process becomes the bottleneck, so much of the work focused on constant-factor improvements. Zakura has moved to the new stack in version 1.3.0, the Tachyon scaling effort has followed, and Vizor Wallet is among the first to integrate it. Zcash cofounder Sean Bowe said shielded wallets using Zakura Common and full nodes like Zakura itself all benefit.

The Road to Visa-Scale Privacy

The release extends the scaling goal outlined when Zakura first launched , which set a target of more than 50,000 private transactions per second against a current ceiling of about one. The team said the software can already handle the 25-second block times proposed for Zcash’s next major upgrade, NU7. ZEC rose about 5% to near $839 after the release, before easing alongside a broader market pullback.
