Robinhood Brings Crypto Trading to the UK, Two Years After Buying the License to Do It

Robinhood began rolling out crypto trading to eligible UK customers this week, giving them access to more than 50 digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Hyperliquid directly inside its main investing app, alongside existing UK products like stocks and shares ISAs, equities, options, and futures.

Trading runs through Bitstamp UK Ltd, registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a crypto-asset service provider, following Robinhood's UK arm joining the FCA register on July 31 ahead of the UK's new crypto authorization regime. The offering carries zero trading, account maintenance, or custody fees, though customers pay a 0.10% foreign exchange fee and 0.30% on weekend conversions. Robinhood is pairing the launch with Cortex Digests for Crypto, a generative-AI tool that explains what's driving price moves in plain English by processing breaking news, market data, and technical indicators. Jordan Sinclair, president of Robinhood UK and general manager of Bitstamp UK, framed the launch around a demographic shift: a new wave of UK investors, he said, sees digital assets as a standard part of a diversified portfolio rather than a separate speculative bet. One detail UK customers should note: crypto held through Bitstamp UK falls outside the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and Financial Ombudsman Service protections that cover the platform's traditional investment products.

This launch is the reason Robinhood bought Bitstamp in the first place. Blockhead reported when the $200 million Bitstamp acquisition closed in mid-2025 that the deal's real value was regulatory reach — Bitstamp's licensing portfolio spans more than 50 jurisdictions across the EU, UK, and Asia, letting Robinhood enter markets like this one without negotiating each regulatory approval independently. The UK rollout is a direct exercise of that access, arriving roughly fourteen months after the deal closed.

The UK move fits a geographic expansion Blockhead has tracked closely. Robinhood confirmed plans to bring crypto products to Singapore via Bitstamp as its Asia headquarters back in February 2025, and Blockhead's most recent markets wrap noted the company's Canadian expansion through Bitbuy and Coinsquare , giving it roughly 300,000 funded customers and access to two of Canada's longest-running regulated exchanges. Robinhood's crypto transaction revenue actually fell 38% year-over-year to $100 million in the second quarter as trading activity cooled broadly across the market — which makes the UK timing less about chasing a hot market and more about building out geographic distribution while it waits for volumes to recover.

The UK has been a conspicuous gap in Robinhood's crypto footprint given how central London is to European finance, and the launch lands as the FCA's new crypto authorization regime takes effect — meaning Robinhood is entering not as an early mover into a grey area, but as one of the first platforms operating fully inside a freshly formalized UK rulebook. That distinction matters for how the launch gets read: less a bet on UK retail crypto demand specifically, and more a bet that being compliant on day one under a brand-new regime is worth more than having arrived first.
