Bitcoin lost 2.33% in a day. That sounds ordinary. The breadth behind it is not: for every coin that rose in the top 100, more than four fell.

Bitcoin trades at $84,010.49, down 2.33% over 24 hours and 2.44% over the week. The total crypto market cap stands at $2,825.42 billion, with $122.56 billion in 24-hour volume.

For live numbers, see our bitcoin price page. This analysis covers one question. Is this a Bitcoin problem, or a market problem that Bitcoin is simply part of?

The Macro Backdrop: The Fed Is Hiking Again

The context is a rate cycle that turned. On September 16 the Federal Reserve raised the federal funds target range by a quarter point to 3.75% to 4% , its first hike since 2023, by a unanimous 12-0 vote.

The next test is close. The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes August personal income and outlays , including the PCE inflation index the Fed watches most, on September 30 at 8:30 a.m. ET. Markets de-risking a day before a key inflation print is not unusual, and the breadth numbers below fit that pattern.

The Breadth Is the Story

The QC 100 Index fell 2.39%. Inside it, 18 coins advanced, 81 declined and 1 was unchanged.

The wider QC 500 is worse. 66 coins up, 433 down. That is a decline ratio of roughly 6.5 to 1.

Bitcoin’s own drop (2.33%) is almost identical to the QuantifyCrypto QC 100 (2.39%), an equal-weighted index of 100 major coins. BTC did not lead this move down. It moved with the market, and it held up better than most of the market’s riskier corners:

Sector 24h change Up Down
Meme -5.02% 4 45
DeFi -4.44% 6 43
Game -4.29% 5 23
Exchange -3.17% 1 21
Currency -2.35% 6 29
NFT -2.26% 7 14
Platform -1.84% 10 40

The pattern is textbook risk reduction. Memecoins and DeFi tokens took the heaviest losses. Bitcoin, the most liquid asset in the market, fell less than both.

Dominance Tells You Where the Money Sits

BTC dominance is 58.67%. ETH dominance is 11.41%.

( Bitcoin dominance measures BTC’s share of total crypto market cap.) Put differently, Bitcoin alone is worth more than five times Ethereum by market share. When 81 of 100 large coins fall together and Bitcoin still holds close to 59% of the entire market, capital is not fleeing crypto for alternatives inside crypto. It is sitting in BTC or leaving.

Ethereum confirms it. ETH trades at $2,716.13, down 2.06% on the day and 3.02% on the week, a slightly weaker weekly result than Bitcoin.

The One Number That Matters

RSI across every sector sits between 52 and 63. All read “Neutral”.

That matters more than the red numbers. A sell-off with 433 of 500 coins falling would normally push momentum readings toward oversold territory. It has not. Sector trend scores sit between 44 and 64.

Two readings of that fact, and both are honest:

  • Bullish reading: the selling is orderly. No capitulation, no forced liquidation cascade visible in momentum. Orderly dips tend to be easier to absorb.
  • Bearish reading: nothing is oversold, so there is no technical reason for buyers to step in yet. There is room for more downside before momentum indicators flag a bargain.

Neither reading is confirmed. The next few daily closes decide which one was right. If you want the full list of forces behind moves like this, we broke them down in what makes the bitcoin price go up or down .

Key Levels

  • $84,000: the round number BTC is sitting on right now. A daily close below it turns a routine dip into a lower weekly low.
  • Weekly change of -2.44%: Bitcoin is down less on the week than ETH (-3.02%) and BNB (-3.13%). As long as that relative strength holds, the market’s anchor is intact.
  • 58.67% dominance: a rise in dominance during further selling would confirm the defensive rotation. A fall in dominance while BTC drops would be the more worrying signal, since it would mean Bitcoin itself is being sold harder than alts.

Bottom Line

This is a market-wide pullback, not a Bitcoin-specific one, and it comes one day before PCE inflation data in a month when the Fed has already hiked. BTC fell with the index and held up better than memes, DeFi and gaming tokens. Momentum is neutral, which cuts both ways: no panic, but no oversold bounce signal either. FAQ

What is the Bitcoin price today? Bitcoin trades at $84,010.49, down 2.33% in the last 24 hours and 2.44% over the past week. Check CoinGecko for the live figure.

Why is Bitcoin down today? The drop is market-wide. 81 of the top 100 coins fell, almost exactly in line with Bitcoin. The backdrop is macro: the Fed hiked rates on September 16 for the first time since 2023, and August PCE inflation data lands on September 30.

What is Bitcoin dominance right now? Bitcoin dominance is 58.67%, meaning BTC accounts for about 59% of the total crypto market cap of $2,825.42 billion. Ethereum dominance is 11.41%.

Is Bitcoin oversold? No. Momentum readings across all crypto sectors sit between 52 and 63 and read neutral. That means the selling has been orderly, but also that there is no technical oversold signal yet.

Which crypto sectors fell the most today? Memecoins fell the most at -5.02%, followed by DeFi at -4.44% and gaming tokens at -4.29%. Platform tokens held up best at -1.84%.

Will Bitcoin go back up? Nobody can say with certainty. A daily close back above $84,000 with stable or rising dominance would be the first constructive sign; a close below it would extend the weekly decline.
