The National Sheriffs’ Association has dropped its opposition to the CLARITY Act, a landmark U.S. cryptocurrency market-structure bill, after months of pushing back on the measure. The shift, reported by Semafor on 4 September 2026, removes one of the law-enforcement objections that had complicated the bill’s path through the Senate, where a vote is expected later this month. The group’s letter to lawmakers was shared with the outlet by an administration official. The decision marks a reversal for a group that had been one of the bill’s most vocal critics.

A Key Law-Enforcement Objection Falls Away

While other law-enforcement groups have put their weight behind the CLARITY Act, the National Sheriffs’ Association had doubled down on its concerns that the proposal could make it harder for law enforcement to prosecute illicit finance. That stance had become a problem for Democrats such as Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, whose support is needed to advance the legislation. The group’s decision to go neutral is therefore being read as a signal of momentum for the bill as it nears a floor vote.

What the Association’s Letter Says

In a letter to lawmakers, the group said it is changing its position to neutral. “Given the complexity of the legislation and the number of important details that remain under consideration, the NSA is changing its position on the CLARITY Act to neutral,” the association wrote, adding that “we believe the most appropriate course is to step back and allow the legislative process to proceed.”

Remaining Hurdles Ahead of the Senate Vote

The Sheriffs’ Association shift clears one obstacle but leaves larger disputes unresolved, most notably how to restrict the president’s ability to profit from digital assets, a provision that remains uncleared for now. The vote is expected before the end of September, leaving lawmakers a narrow window to resolve the remaining disagreements. The bill is among several efforts in Washington to set a federal framework for digital assets, a debate that has also seen the CFTC chair put staff on notice to build crypto rules if the CLARITY Act fails and President Trump press for the bill’s passage at a White House crypto summit .
