Hana Bank, one of South Korea’s largest commercial lenders, has issued a $100 million digital bond on Euroclear’s blockchain platform and settled it the same day, a first for Korea’s foreign-currency bond market. In a statement reported by The Korea Herald , the bank said the five-year bond was issued Friday through Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure, known as D-FMI, with allocations and payments completed on the issuance date. The move gives the lender a faster, cheaper way to raise foreign-currency funding at a time when banks are modernizing how debt is issued and settled.

Korea’s First T+0 Settlement for a Foreign-Currency Bond

Conventional foreign-currency bond deals typically take three to five business days to settle. Hana’s $100 million note instead achieved a T+0 settlement, letting the issuer receive funds the same day and stripping out administrative steps. The shorter cycle also reduces settlement risk and frees up capital that would otherwise sit idle while a transaction clears. According to the bank, the deal was the first time a Korean financial institution had directly used Euroclear’s blockchain infrastructure to issue a digital bond.

D-FMI Plugs Into Euroclear’s Existing Rails

The D-FMI platform runs issuance, registration and settlement on a distributed ledger but is connected to Euroclear’s conventional settlement network, where it operates as an international central securities depository. That design lets institutional investors buy and trade the bond through their existing Euroclear accounts without installing separate infrastructure, so the digital note can circulate alongside conventional securities. Hana used documentation from its existing global medium-term note program, with Standard Chartered acting as the sole lead manager on the deal.

Banks Keep Moving Debt Onto Blockchain Rails

The issuance adds to a widening push to put real-world debt on distributed ledgers, as issuers look to cut settlement times and reach investors on-chain. India’s securities regulator has begun a pilot to tokenize the country’s corporate bond market , while U.S. regulators have created room for tokenized stock trading .

What Hana Bank Said

“The $100 million digital bond issuance and implementation of T+0 settlement represent a significant step beyond simply diversifying our funding channels, as they bring blockchain technology into the capital market,” a Hana Bank official said. “We will continue to adopt advanced infrastructure and explore innovative funding solutions that meet the needs of global investors.”
