Trump Media's Crypto Retreat Gets a Number: $360.6 Million in Digital Asset Losses

Trump Media reported roughly $360.6 million in losses on digital assets and related holdings for the first half of 2026, the company disclosed this week, with a second-quarter net loss of about $238 million driven largely by markdowns on its Bitcoin and CRO positions.

The filing lands a few days after Trump Media, Crypto.com, and Yorkville Acquisition Corp. mutually terminated a proposed $6.42 billion CRO treasury company on August 7, along with a related ETF-servicing agreement and plans to integrate Crypto.com-powered prediction markets directly into Truth Social. Interim CEO Kevin McGurn attributed the reversal to competitive dynamics rather than any single setback, saying the digital asset treasury market had grown crowded over the past year as public companies converged on similar strategies of holding crypto on their balance sheets. The retreat is specific rather than total: Trump Media's earlier $105 million CRO purchase from September 2025 stands, the company still held roughly 9,542 BTC and about 756 million CRO tokens as of June 30, and Crypto.com's existing relationship continues through a narrower marketing arrangement promoting its prediction-market products to Truth Social users.

Revenue told a smaller but more encouraging story: $1.7 million for the quarter, up 89% year-over-year, driven primarily by Truth Social advertising. That figure sits alongside a business Trump Media is betting more of its near-term narrative on — Truth API, its data-licensing product for AI developers wanting structured access to the president's public statements, which launched in July with paying institutional clients within its first week.

This is the third stage of a story Blockhead has followed closely since the digital asset treasury wound down. In early August, Blockhead reported that Trump Media's Truth API had already signed paying clients while its bitcoin treasury had lost more than half a billion dollars , with two congressional letters to the SEC about the treasury program still unanswered — noting that DJT's stock rally was tracking the data business far more closely than it was tracking Bitcoin's decline. Blockhead's most recent markets wrap also flagged Trump Media's transfer of 2,628 BTC to Crypto.com over the August 1–2 weekend , part of cumulative disposals the company puts at 7,281 BTC and describes as transfers rather than sales — the same characterization it has used for earlier movements.

The CRO cancellation and this week's loss disclosure aren't really two separate stories — they're the same story told twice, first as a forward-looking decision and now as a backward-looking number. What matters for anyone tracking corporate crypto treasuries broadly is the reasoning McGurn gave: not that crypto treasuries failed as a strategy, but that too many public companies chased the same playbook at once, compressing whatever differentiation early movers like Strategy once had. Trump Media isn't exiting digital assets. It's concentrating its next growth story around a data business that, unlike a treasury, doesn't lose value every time the market has a bad quarter.
