Kraken Prop Adds Commodity Signals With Lower Non-Crypto Commissions

TL;DR: Kraken Prop has added six commodity markets and reduced non-crypto commissions on most plans. Participants submit simulated trade signals; they do not own the underlying commodity positions.

Kraken Prop has expanded its offering to include gold, silver, oil and other commodity markets, while reducing the commission applied to non-crypto activity on most plans. The October 29 announcement places the expansion within the company’s evaluation and performance-based payout service.

The product’s structure deserves to be stated clearly at the outset. Kraken says participants provide trade signals and do not hold real positions; the stated trading limits are simulated.

The change covers six commodity markets

Kraken’s announcement lists gold, silver, WTI oil, Brent oil, copper and natural gas. On plans other than Lite, the non-crypto commission falls from four basis points to two basis points per side. Crypto-market commissions are unchanged.

The company says the commodity offering is available where Kraken Prop operates, excluding the UAE. Plan-specific leverage and notional caps differ, so a maximum quoted for one tier should not be applied to every participant.

The announcement also identifies the service as unregulated and says evaluation fees become non-refundable once trading begins. Those terms are material to understanding what a customer is purchasing.

A lower commission changes the arithmetic

Two basis points equals 0.02%. Applied to a hypothetical $50,000 notional signal, that is $10 on entry and another $10 on exit, assuming the notional remains the same. At four basis points per side, the corresponding total would be $40 rather than $20.

That calculation illustrates the fee change, not an expected profit. A strategy still has to account for price movement, spreads, the platform’s evaluation rules and other applicable costs.

Lower transaction costs can make a difference to a frequently traded strategy, but they cannot turn an unfavorable price outcome into a sound trade by themselves. The proportionate benefit also depends on how often and at what size the participant trades.

Simulated exposure is different from asset ownership

Kraken’s product page describes the commodity offering within its Prop service. A participant is not buying a bar of gold, taking delivery of oil or acquiring a conventional futures position simply because the interface displays those markets.

The relevant claim is instead against the program under its terms, including the conditions for evaluation, drawdown limits and any payout. That distinction changes what should be compared with other financial products.

A large simulated account number is also not a cash balance the participant can withdraw. It represents the environment in which performance is assessed. The amount available for payout, if any, follows the program’s rules rather than the headline account size.

Continuous availability does not remove market boundaries

A service can keep quoting a reference market when conventional venues are closed. The quality and responsiveness of those quotations then depend on its pricing methodology and available information, rather than on an assumption that every underlying market is equally liquid at every hour.

This is particularly relevant to commodity news arriving outside normal trading sessions. A visible price is not, on its own, evidence of deep executable liquidity in the underlying physical or futures market.

For someone assessing the offering, the meaningful questions concern the exact contract, the calculation of performance, the treatment of unusual market conditions and the path from a successful evaluation to an actual payment.

The expansion broadens the range of signals Kraken Prop participants can submit and changes a specific part of the cost structure. It should be understood on those terms, without confusing simulated trading capacity with ownership of commodities or a guarantee of income.
