Hyperliquid Strategies Triples Buyback to $100 Million as PURR Trades Below Net Asset Value

hyperliquid

Hyperliquid Strategies Inc (NASDAQ: PURR) is tripling the amount it can spend buying back its own stock, a decision that lands while the digital-asset treasury company’s shares trade below the value of the HYPE tokens on its balance sheet. The board lifted the repurchase program to as much as $100 million from $30 million and pushed its termination date out to October 31, 2027, from December 5, 2026, the company said in a press release on Friday, October 23.

Roughly $72 million remains available under the enlarged authorization, which implies about $28 million of the earlier program had already been deployed. For a vehicle whose stated purpose is accumulating HYPE, the arithmetic of retiring discounted equity now matters almost as much as the token purchases themselves.

The Terms of the Expanded Authorization

The increase is a board-level decision, not an open-ended market operation. “The increase in the program reflects the Board’s confidence in the Company’s long-term capital strategy and provides flexibility to buy back PURR shares as part of the Company’s broader treasury management framework,” the company said.

The mechanics are deliberately open. Repurchases may be made “from time to time in open market transactions at prevailing market prices, in privately negotiated transactions or by other means in accordance with federal securities laws.” The company added that “the actual timing, number and value of shares repurchased under the program will be determined by management at its discretion and will depend on a number of factors, including the market price of HSI’s common stock, general market and economic conditions and applicable legal requirements.”

The original $30 million authorization was announced in late August 2026. Tripling it to $100 million and adding more than a year of runway to the termination date signals that the board wants the tool available through 2027, not just for a quarter-end window.

A Treasury Company Trading Below Its Net Asset Value

The company’s own dashboard, updated October 22, counts 38.8 million HYPE tokens held, worth about $2.98 billion at the dashboard’s $76.69 token price. Against that, PURR has 301.1 million fully diluted shares and a fully diluted market capitalization near $2.67 billion. The dashboard puts adjusted net asset value at roughly $9.92 per share, which means the stock was trading at a 0.89x multiple to that NAV figure.

That discount is the entire story in one ratio. At a share price near $8.85, a $100 million buyback would retire roughly 11.3 million shares, or about 3.8% of the fully diluted count. And because each share changes hands at 0.89x NAV, every dollar spent on repurchases retires about $1.12 of net asset value. That is roughly 12% of per-share accretion at the dashboard’s figures, and it compounds with each block of shares retired.

HYPE itself traded near $76.72 on October 24, according to CoinGecko, with a market capitalization near $17.1 billion. The token entered the top 10 by market capitalization in September after a run of record highs, and Hyperliquid Strategies remains the largest HYPE-focused treasury vehicle, so its capital-allocation decisions read through directly to how efficiently shareholders hold exposure to the token.

Why Buy Back Shares Instead of More HYPE

The tension is real. The company’s primary focus is accumulating HYPE, and a buyback is a competing use of the same balance sheet. At a 0.89x discount, retiring equity is mechanically more NAV-accretive per dollar than buying HYPE at par, but it does not grow the token position or the staking yield that flows from it. The board has effectively widened the ceiling on one tool while leaving the accumulation strategy intact.

This is the same playbook spreading across crypto treasury companies. Strategy’s STRC buybacks reached $192 million as its Bitcoin accumulation slowed in late October, and smaller HYPE and Bitcoin treasury vehicles have used repurchases to defend per-share value when their stocks trade at discounts. For a company like Hyperliquid Strategies, which runs a validator and stakes its treasury HYPE, a buyback is also a signal to equity holders that the discount will not be allowed to widen unchecked.

Part of the calculus is what the treasury does with the HYPE it already holds. Hyperliquid Strategies runs a Hyperliquid validator jointly with Unit Labs, and the majority of the initial stake is delegated from its own treasury HYPE, custodied at Anchorage Digital Bank. Staking that position produces a yield stream, and every additional HYPE token bought enlarges it. A share buyback adds nothing to that stream; it reallocates equity between holders. The board’s decision therefore reads as a judgment that the stock’s discount is wide enough to justify diverting capital away from token accumulation, up to the new ceiling.

The counterargument is straightforward: repurchasing shares when the underlying asset is down does not create HYPE. It reallocates the discount from one set of holders to another. A buyback is accretive on paper at a discount, but only if the token price holds or rises; the moment HYPE falls faster than the buyback can retire shares, the per-share NAV falls regardless.

What the Buyback Does Not Guarantee

An authorization is not a deployment schedule, and the company was explicit about that. “There is no guarantee as to the number of shares that will be repurchased, and the repurchase program may be extended, suspended or discontinued at any time without prior notice at the Company’s discretion,” the release states. The $100 million is a ceiling, not a target.

The correlation risk cuts both ways. PURR’s share price is closely tied to HYPE, and a 9.92 million HYPE unlock lands on November 6, worth roughly $760 million at current prices. If that supply event pressures the token, the NAV and the share price fall together, and a $100 million authorization buys fewer shares of a shrinking denominator. The 0.89x multiple can widen just as easily as it can close.

What to Watch Next

The first observable signal is whether management actually spends the authorization. Repurchase activity will show up in subsequent 10-Q filings and any 8-K disclosures, and the dashboard refreshes next on October 27 with a new NAV read. The metric that matters is the multiple itself: if the 0.89x discount begins to close as shares are retired, the buyback is doing its job; if the discount stays or widens, the market is pricing something the repurchases cannot fix.
