Bitcoin Holds Above $84,000 Despite Largest ETF Outflows Since June

US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds shed roughly $680 million last week, their largest weekly outflow since June, yet Bitcoin held above $84,000 on Monday as falling oil prices lifted risk assets, according to CoinDesk . The gap between institutional fund selling and a resilient spot price is the defining feature of the market right now, and it raises a direct question: if ETF investors are trimming exposure, who is absorbing the supply?

The short answer is a macro reprieve that has so far outweighed fund de-risking. But the flow data leaves the rally on thinner footing than the headline price suggests.

What the ETF Flow Data Shows

Farside Investors’ daily figures show the week’s selling was concentrated in two sessions. US spot Bitcoin funds lost $484.9 million on October 7, led by BlackRock’s IBIT ($207.7 million), Fidelity’s FBTC ($105.1 million), and ARK’s ARKB ($101.7 million), then another $244.1 million on October 8, when FBTC posted a $197.1 million outflow. A modest $21.1 million inflow on October 9 left the five-day total near $679 million, a level CoinDesk, citing SoSoValue, described as the heaviest weekly withdrawal since June. The swing is even starker against the prior week, when the same funds took in about $241.1 million, underscoring how quickly institutional sentiment has turned.

Ether funds have tracked the same trend, with nine consecutive sessions of outflows through last week, a sign the de-risking is not confined to Bitcoin.

Why Bitcoin Is Holding Up

The most visible catalyst is energy. West Texas Intermediate crude slipped about 1.8% to near $90.30 on Monday after the Trump administration said Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel and partially eased sanctions on Russian oil imports. Cheaper oil blunts inflationary pressure and gave risk assets a broad lift, with nine of the top ten cryptocurrencies advancing over the past 24 hours, led by a 5.1% jump in Avalanche and a 2.4% rise in Chainlink.

That tailwind is not unqualified. Treasury yields reached 24-year highs in the week to October 9, and the heavy outflows on October 7 and 8 arrived alongside a slide that briefly pushed Bitcoin toward $80,400. Its rebound above $82,000 suggests spot buyers stepped in as funds sold, though the flow data alone does not identify where that demand came from. Either way, the outflows point to cautious institutional positioning even as the price grinds higher. One way to read the divergence is that ETF shares are only a slice of Bitcoin’s total volume, and off-exchange or derivatives activity can absorb fund selling without dragging down the spot tape. Without clearer order-flow data, though, the spot-demand explanation remains an inference rather than a confirmed fact.

What to Watch Next

Analysts cited by CoinDesk flagged $82,000 as the support level bulls must defend and the October 14 US inflation report as the next major catalyst. A hot reading would reinforce the yield pressure behind the ETF outflows and could push Bitcoin back toward that support; a cooler print would support the view that the macro reprieve is sustainable. For a market currently priced by two competing forces, the inflation number carries more weight than usual.
