EDX Markets, the institution-only digital asset venue backed by Wall Street trading and venture capital firms, will list Verified Bitcoin (vBTC) for institutional spot trading, the company announced on October 8. Under the partnership with VerifiedX, EDX will also join the VerifiedX network as a validator, extending its role from trading venue into the infrastructure that secures the token. The move deepens Wall Street’s push into tokenized Bitcoin, letting institutions put BTC to work across trading, lending, and decentralized finance without surrendering the underlying asset.
A 1:1-Backed, Programmable Bitcoin
vBTC is a tokenized form of Bitcoin built on VerifiedX ‘s layer-2 protocol. Each token is collateralized one-to-one by native BTC, with Taproot addresses embedded in every token and a direct redemption path back to Bitcoin. VerifiedX positions vBTC as self-custodial and non-synthetic, targeting institutional workflows such as price discovery, cross-market arbitrage, treasury and balance-sheet mobility, and borrowing and lending. Rather than creating economic exposure to Bitcoin without a direct path to the underlying asset, vBTC is built around continuous ownership, utilization and redemption. A canonical EVM representation, vBTC.b, extends the same redemption path to supported Ethereum-compatible environments.
EDX Takes a Validator Role
Rather than simply listing a new asset, EDX Markets will validate transactions and participate in governance on the VerifiedX network. The arrangement is designed to let institutions keep direct control over the threshold-signing environment securing their Bitcoin instead of relying on a public signing pool, while EDX’s central clearinghouse reduces bilateral counterparty exposure for institutional participants. “Institutional adoption of digital assets increasingly depends on giving sophisticated market participants greater flexibility in how they trade, move and deploy capital,” said David Olsson, Chief Commercial Officer of EDX Markets.
What Changes for Institutions
“Bitcoin does not need another financial abstraction. It needs infrastructure that allows the asset itself to do more,” said Jay Pollak, Head of Strategy at the VerifiedX Foundation. For allocators, the listing bridges EDX’s institutional market structure with programmable Bitcoin infrastructure, preserving native ownership and a direct redemption path. EDX said additional details on vBTC availability will be announced in the coming weeks, and that its products remain available only to institutions in the U.S. and certain other jurisdictions.
