Quick Take
1. ZEC trades at $1,373.30, up 16.55% on the day after an intraday high near $1,385 on September 16, extending a run that has carried it roughly 192% since this site’s first assessment in July.
2. Monero fell 1.67% to $495.76 on the same session, back under $500, making it one of only ten declining assets on a day when 89 of the QC 100 advanced.
3. The separation is structural rather than temporary: Grayscale’s ZCSH ETF has logged a three-week inflow streak totaling $358.6 million, and Monero has no equivalent vehicle.
The two largest privacy coins moved in opposite directions on Wednesday, and the gap between them has become the clearest evidence available about what is actually driving this sector.
Zcash trades at $1,373.30, up 16.55% over 24 hours and 13.26% on the week, after reaching an intraday high near $1,385. Monero trades at $495.76, down 1.67% on the day and 3.08% on the week. Live price data via CoinGecko and CoinGecko .
Why is Zcash rising while Monero falls?
Because one has a US-listed exchange-traded product and the other does not, and that is the whole difference.
Grayscale’s spot Zcash ETF, ZCSH, listed on NYSE Arca on August 25 and has recorded a three-week inflow streak totaling $358.6 million, with assets passing $400 million by early September and trackers estimating holdings near 429,000 ZEC. The fund’s filings are searchable through SEC EDGAR . Monero has no comparable vehicle and has been delisted from most regulated venues over the past decade.
This site’s comparison of the two coins in August scored Zcash ahead specifically on access and regulatory exposure while giving Monero the rounds on privacy and track record, and argued that the sector’s dividing line is permission rather than cryptography. The ETF flows since have turned that argument into a price gap.
Last week we made the narrower version of the point, noting that buying “privacy” as a theme currently means buying Zcash, and that diversifying across the sector may dilute the exposure that produced the returns rather than spreading the risk. A single session with ZEC up 16.55% and XMR down 1.67% is that observation in its clearest form.
What else is behind this move?
Network upgrade optimism, whale accumulation and a large short position under pressure.
ZEC climbed more than 20% on September 16 while the broader market was selling off, with network upgrade sentiment cited as the driver. Zcash activated the Ironwood NU6.3 upgrade on July 28, introducing a new shielded pool designed to make the integrity of circulating supply independently verifiable, following the discovery of an Orchard soundness vulnerability in May. Upgrade documentation is published by the Electric Coin Company .
On-chain trackers reported a whale withdrawing 15,300 ZEC, roughly $17.92 million, from Binance, OKX and Kraken on September 16. Large exchange withdrawals reduce the supply immediately available for sale, though they do not confirm buying intent or holding plans , and that boundary matters: the tokens left the exchanges, which is all the data shows.
There is also a concentrated bet against the rally. Trader Garrett Jin reportedly opened a $46.65 million short position against ZEC covering 39,760 tokens with a liquidation price near $2,540, and was reported down $18.4 million on the position earlier this month. A short of that size is both a vote of no confidence and, if price continues higher, fuel. Liquidation data updates at CoinGlass .
How far has Zcash come?
Roughly 192% since July 8, when this site published its first structural assessment with ZEC at $469.57.
Every level named along that path has resolved. The July markers were $440 as support and $500 as resistance; both cleared. On August 22, with the token at $821.79, we identified $1,000 as the round number the market had begun discussing, and flagged the Grayscale ETF with its anticipated August 25 listing as the catalyst. Both arrived. Last week at $1,223 we wrote that ETF flows were the durable part of the story and the short squeeze was not, and that ZCSH asset growth was the number to follow.
The three-week inflow streak is that number continuing.
What are the risks?
A vertical chart, a mining cost squeeze, and a regulatory date that has not moved.
Miner revenue is reportedly about 3% lower than when the token traded below $900, after the network’s solrate briefly passed 30 GSol/s for the first time and competition increased. That is a second-order effect but a real one.
More importantly, the European Union’s anti-money-laundering framework is set to restrict anonymity-enhancing tokens at regulated providers from July 1, 2027. A US listing does not bind European regulators. This site has flagged that date in every Zcash article since July, and a 192% gain does not reduce the exposure. If anything, a larger position accumulated at higher prices increases what is at stake when the rules are drafted.
What levels matter now?
$1,375 and $1,500 above, with the $1,200 to $1,250 region as the area that decides whether the breakout holds.
Analysts have placed $1,375 and $1,500 in focus after price cleared the $1,250 pivot, with a broader target near $1,539 while the ascending channel holds. Support has been identified near $1,128, and liquidity remains concentrated below $1,170 after higher clusters were swept. Prediction markets have put the odds of ZEC reaching $1,400 by year-end around 67%.
Bottom line
Zcash reached an intraday high near $1,385 while Monero fell below $500 in the same session, and the separation traces directly to Grayscale’s ZCSH ETF, which has drawn $358.6 million over three weeks against a Monero market with no equivalent product.
The privacy trade of 2026 was never really about privacy. It was about which privacy asset the regulated system would hold, and the answer has been visible in the flows since August 25. Watch the ETF streak rather than the candle; when it breaks, the mechanism behind this gap breaks with it.
