Ethereum Foundation Sets 2029 Quantum-Resistance Target for Layer 1

The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster set a December 2029 target for making Ethereum’s base layer quantum-resistant across execution, consensus and data. The commitment, published Sept. 7 in an official protocol priorities update , treats a hypothetical “Q-day” in 2030 as an aggressive planning assumption rather than a forecast.

The cluster said the self-imposed deadline will remain non-negotiable at least until January 2027, when it plans to reassess progress in quantum computing with outside experts. The announcement defines a roadmap target; it does not mean Ethereum has already deployed post-quantum protection.

The deadline covers three protocol layers

Full readiness is intended to protect Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers. The update places that outcome at a milestone called L*, five hard forks after Glamsterdam. If Glamsterdam ships in December 2026, reaching L* by December 2029 would require an average interval of 7.2 months between forks, a pace the cluster described as aggressive.

The Foundation said delivery cannot proceed as a simple sequence. Research, specifications, client implementation and testing will need to overlap across multiple forks, with work involving client teams, cryptographers, security reviewers, grant recipients and academic researchers.

A minimum safeguard provides a second track

The roadmap also includes a minimum viable post-quantum milestone at J*. Its planned components include a post-quantum heartbeat for consensus, leanDA sampling for data availability and leanSPHINCS transactions for execution. A post-quantum public-key registry is assigned to the preceding I* milestone.

That contingency is designed to keep the network operating through Q-day with reduced guarantees. The cluster said researchers are still defining what those reduced guarantees would entail. Full resistance remains the 2029 objective, while post-quantum attestations are among the remaining elements needed for full economic finality.

Hegotá becomes an early scheduling test

The update links the long-term security deadline to decisions being made now. Ethereum has entered the Hegotá scoping period after gathering 62 proposals, 16 contribution templates and input from roughly 60 researchers and engineers. The Protocol cluster said Hegotá is not itself the post-quantum fork, but will influence whether later milestones arrive on time. Its preferred headliners are FOCIL under EIP-7805 and Frame Transactions under EIP-8141. Limiting extra consensus-layer scope is intended to preserve engineering capacity for the I* and J* work that follows.
