Public Citizen Says Trump-Linked Crypto Ventures Cost Investors $4.7 Billion

TRUMP Main

A U.S. consumer advocacy group says crypto ventures tied to Donald Trump and his family have left investors at least $4.7 billion underwater, a toll that is largely unrealized. Public Citizen, in a report published August 27, tallied losses across five products: the Trump Digital Trading Cards NFTs, the $TRUMP meme coin, the World Liberty Financial $WLFI token, the USD1 stablecoin, and Trump Media’s digital-asset treasury, according to the group’s analysis .

Meme Coin and Token Losses

The $TRUMP meme coin accounts for the largest share. Public Citizen estimates buyers are down about $3.2 billion, with analytics firm Nansen finding roughly one million of about 1.6 million Solana wallets that bought the token are underwater. The top 1% of winning wallets captured about $2.7 billion, or 80% of all gains, the report says. That continues a pattern BlockchainReporter previously detailed in its coverage of the TRUMP token’s collapse and the retail losses that followed. The report also finds the earlier Trump NFT trading-card collections have shed about 76% of what buyers originally paid.

WLFI and a Bitcoin Treasury

Public Citizen estimates the $WLFI governance token has cost investors at least $1 billion, led by a paper loss at AI Financial Corporation, a Nasdaq-listed company that rebranded into a World Liberty Financial treasury vehicle. The report also counts roughly $450 million in unrealized losses on Trump Media’s 9,477 bitcoin, which cost about $1 billion but were worth around $557 million as of June 30, 2026. The broader family footprint keeps widening, with Trump-linked American Bitcoin adding to its corporate holdings this year.

An Advocacy Warning

Public Citizen, which describes its mission as challenging corporate influence over government, frames the figures as a consumer-protection warning rather than a market forecast, and the losses are its estimates, not audited results. Trump reported at least $1.4 billion in income from crypto businesses in his 2025 financial disclosure, the report notes, while buyers of the USD1 stablecoin have not suffered major losses because the asset retained its dollar peg. The group urges lawmakers weighing the CLARITY Act to bar officials and their families from issuing or profiting from digital assets.
