Child sexual abuse networks have increasingly turned to cryptocurrency to move payments, and authorities say blockchain tracing is now cutting through the anonymity those networks rely on. In a sting called Operation Lighthouse, blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis worked with law enforcement agencies around the world to round up more than 14,000 investigative leads, CoinDesk reported .
How the operation ran
The operation was headquartered at the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance in New York and partnered with Europol, the Australian Federal Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the UK’s National Crime Agency. Investigators examined more than 29,000 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers and targeted more than 100 separate forums and hubs used to trade abuse material, generating the 14,000 leads to guide further investigation. Authorities have flagged the use of cryptocurrency in such networks as an acute and growing problem.
Rather than relying on a single agency’s view of the flow of funds, the operation pooled blockchain tracing across jurisdictions, letting investigators connect addresses and identifiers that would otherwise appear unrelated.
Who pitched in
Suspects were located across 125 countries, and some were already registered sex offenders. Crypto businesses including payments firm Block, Binance and Coinbase contributed to the effort, alongside nonprofit specialists such as the Internet Watch Foundation. “The inherent transparency of blockchain makes it difficult for criminals to hide for long while exploiting victims,” said Gavin Sather, senior program manager for anti-child sexual exploitation at Binance.
Why tracing matters
“Perpetrators exploit financial services, payment systems, social media and internet platforms to commit or facilitate these crimes,” said Danny van Althuis, a Europol team leader. “It is therefore essential that these sectors join forces to prevent and combat online child sexual abuse and to identify those who commit, enable or facilitate it.” The operation is a high-profile example of how on-chain tracing is feeding law-enforcement referrals , turning value transfer that was once treated as untraceable into actionable evidence. The 29,000 addresses examined and 14,000 leads generated give investigators a map of networks spanning more than 100 forums, work that would be hard to replicate through conventional financial records alone.
