Coinbase Misses on Both Transaction and Subscription Revenue – Diversification Story Faces a Test

Coinbase reported $1.22 billion in total revenue for Q2 2026 — below the $1.29 billion Wall Street consensus by $70 million, and down 19% from the $1.5 billion posted in the year-ago period, according to its earnings release on Thursday.

The miss came from two directions simultaneously. Transaction revenue — Coinbase's largest single line — came in at $599 million, below the $628 million analyst estimate, as bitcoin fell roughly 14% and ether dropped around 25% during the quarter, suppressing retail and institutional trading activity. Barclays and Clear Street had already projected trading volume of approximately $152–160 billion for the period, well below the Street's $178 billion estimate.

What complicated the narrative was the subscription and services segment also falling short — a segment Coinbase and its analyst base have consistently positioned as a low-beta hedge against exactly this kind of downturn. The company did post its 14th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA at $207.8 million, down from $303.3 million in Q1, and a third consecutive quarter of record crypto trading volume market share at 10.3%, up from 9.1% in Q1.

Average USDC held in Coinbase products reached a record $20 billion in Q2 — more than 30% of all USDC in circulation — a figure the company highlighted as a structural tailwind for its stablecoin-driven revenue lines.

“Coinbase is no longer a bet just on the price of Bitcoin. All of financial services are getting updated by crypto, whether that's trading or payments or lending, and Coinbase is the best-positioned company in the world to power this,” Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO, said in a statement

“We continue to execute well on what we can control and the underlying business is performing well. The Everything Exchange is delivering real revenue, not just green shoots, and starting to yield tangible diversification. Our tightly managed expenses came in below the midpoint of guidance for every major expense line, and we reached a new all-time high in crypto trading volume market share for the third quarter in a row," said Alesia Haas, chief financial officer. “Despite market headwinds, our fundamentals remain strong as we consolidate trading share and continue to build through the cycle.”

Shares fell roughly 5% in after-hours trading following the release. The stock has since recovered, closing Thursday at $163.58, up 2.18% on the session.

Coinbase CEO Armstrong and CFO Haas faced questions on the earnings call about whether the diversification strategy is working or simply growing too slowly to offset a cyclical compression in transaction revenue.
