Coinbase’s $719M Q3 Profit Was Nearly All a $715M Unrealized Crypto Gain

Coinbase reported $719 million in net income for the third quarter of 2026. The number that describes how the exchange actually operated is $78 million. That is adjusted net income after the company removed a $715 million unrealized gain on the crypto assets it holds for investment, per the reconciliation in Coinbase’s Q3 earnings release .

The gap is the story. Under the fair-value accounting Coinbase adopted with ASU 2023-08, bitcoin and ether on the company’s own balance sheet are marked to market every quarter, so a rally flows straight into GAAP net income. The $715 million gain supplied roughly 99% of the $719 million headline profit. Strip out the mark-to-market and the operating business earned $78 million: flat, not booming.

“Quarterly net income was $719 million, driven largely by unrealized gains on crypto assets that we hold for investment,” Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas said on the earnings call . “Our adjusted net income was $78 million, and we grew adjusted EBITDA 60% quarter over quarter to $333 million.”

The $715 Million That Was Not From Trading

The reconciliation walks the math step by step. Coinbase started with $718.7 million of GAAP net income, backed out a $715.0 million gain on crypto held for investment and a $39.2 million gain on other investments, then added back $113.3 million in tax effects to land at $77.7 million of adjusted net income, which the company rounds to $78 million in its own headline.

The arithmetic is simple, but the distinction matters. Dividing $715.0 million by $718.7 million gives 99.5%. Nearly every dollar of reported profit was an unrealized mark on crypto the company already held, not a fee collected from a customer. Subtract the full adjustment stack and the remaining $77.7 million is what the platform’s trading, subscription, and stablecoin businesses generated after tax.

The accounting rule doing the heavy lifting is the same one that pushed Strategy’s third-quarter profit to $19.5 billion on a bitcoin fair-value gain. ASU 2023-08 lets companies that hold crypto for investment recognize unrealized gains in net income instead of carrying the assets as intangibles with impairment-only treatment. Coinbase has said these holdings are primarily long-term and not part of its revenue-generating trading activity, which is why management asks investors to look past them.

A 10% Volume Decline and a Market-Share Gain

The quarter began at year-to-date lows in crypto volume and volatility, which compressed to multi-year lows before conditions improved in September and total crypto market capitalization rose 37% from the end of the second quarter. Against that backdrop, total crypto market trading volume still fell 10% for the full quarter.

The operating picture was steady, not strong. “Transaction revenue was essentially stable at $590 million,” Haas said, and that stability came against a market that shrank. Consumer revenue held flat at $450 million, institutional revenue slipped 8% to $92 million, and other transaction revenue rose 2% to $48 million.

The data says the company held revenue in a falling market. It did so by taking share. “We doubled crypto trading volume market share since this time last year, so it’s now at 10.7%,” Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong said, citing gains in both spot and derivatives. The release calls it a fourth consecutive quarter of market-share gains, with assets on platform returning to 12.5% of total crypto market capitalization.

That is the bullish read of a flat quarter: Coinbase is winning a shrinking pie. The bearish read is that $590 million of transaction revenue, flat against a 10% volume decline, is still $590 million, with no growth in the business line most sensitive to crypto prices.

Stablecoins and Prediction Markets Did the Actual Work

The durable revenue sits in subscription and services, which grew 3% to $570 million and reached 49% of net revenue. Stablecoin revenue rose 5% to $307 million, and the average USDC held in Coinbase products hit an all-time high of $22 billion, a fourteenth consecutive quarter of records. The release also claims about 30% of USDC’s average market cap and roughly half of all USDC economics over the past year.

Stablecoin distribution is widening on the platform at the same time. Coinbase listed Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin across Prime, Exchange, and Retail only days before the earnings print.

Prediction markets are the newer engine. They surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue, with daily traders up more than 60% quarter over quarter and 82% quarterly compound growth since launch. “Prediction markets are adding another revenue stream and are less correlated to crypto volatility,” Haas said. “These businesses make Coinbase more diversified and resilient across market cycles.”

Coinbase One paid subscribers reached a record, up 24% year over year, with the company reporting 3.5x higher average revenue per user than non-subscribers and 4.2x higher balances per user. The average daily loan book balance also hit an all-time high, up 74% year over year, and Base remained the leading layer-2 for spot crypto trading and DeFi total value locked as of the third quarter.

The Paper Profit Is Real Until Prices Reverse

The limitation is embedded in Coinbase’s own history. The same reconciliation table shows the line item in reverse: a $718.2 million crypto loss in Q4 2025 helped produce a $666.7 million net loss, and a $482.4 million crypto loss in Q1 2026 fed a $394.1 million net loss. The $715 million gain in Q3 is the mirror image, unrealized, non-cash, and subject to reversal if crypto prices fall.

None of this makes the quarter weak. Adjusted EBITDA reached $333 million, up 60% quarter over quarter and positive for a fifteenth consecutive quarter, and that measure excludes the crypto mark entirely. Coinbase ended the quarter with $8.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents and roughly $11 billion in total available resources, against about $2 billion of remaining repurchase authorization.

What Q4’s Early Numbers Show

Coinbase gave the first look at the current quarter: transaction revenue through October 25 was approximately $165 million, and it guided subscription and services revenue to $550 million to $630 million, up about 3% at the midpoint. It expects fourth-quarter adjusted expenses of $1.07 billion to $1.157 billion, a sequential rise driven by marketing, including a full quarter of USDC rewards paid to Hyperliquid and discretionary spending on prediction markets. Full-year adjusted expense guidance came down again, to $4.15 billion to $4.3 billion.

The next observable signal is whether crypto prices hold their mark through the fourth quarter. If they do, another unrealized gain will pad the next headline. If they do not, the same line item that made this quarter’s $719 million will drag it back. The adjusted figures, $78 million of net income and $333 million of adjusted EBITDA, are the ones that describe the exchange itself.
