According to Odaily Planet Daily, Ethereum Foundation core researcher Justin Drake announced on the X platform that the Ethereum Foundation is adjusting its zero-knowledge proof (ZK) cryptography approach, abandoning the previously used SNARK-friendly hash function Poseidon and shifting to more mature traditional hash algorithms such as SHA or BLAKE series, in order to improve Ethereum's long-term security. Since 2018, the Ethereum Foundation has continuously invested in research on "SNARK-friendly hashes," hoping to reduce the computational cost of zero-knowledge proof systems. Poseidon, launched in 2019, subsequently became the mainstream SNARK-friendly hash solution, widely used in ZK Rollups and the zkVM ecosystem, providing security for billions of dollars worth of on-chain assets. However, in recent years, new SNARK designs have proven that traditional hash functions do not necessarily need special optimization for zero-knowledge proofs. New proof schemes based on standard hash algorithms such as SHA2 and BLAKE2s have already achieved performance close to Poseidon in SNARK. The core breakthrough comes from the "binary fields" technology. Compared to traditional finite fields based on large prime number operations, binary fields are naturally adapted to the underlying bit operations of computers, allowing Boolean logic operations in traditional hash functions to be more efficiently integrated into zero-knowledge proof systems. Currently, new schemes based on binary fields have achieved approximately 1 million proofs per second using traditional hash calls, with a performance overhead on laptops of only about 100 times that of native CPU Boolean computation, far exceeding previous expectations. This breakthrough primarily stems from several cryptographic research projects in recent years, including the Binius scheme proposed in 2023 and the recently launched Flock research results. Switching to long-proven hash algorithms such as SHA can reduce reliance on complex cryptographic structures, further strengthen the design principle of the "least trust assumption," and lay the foundation for blockchain security for decades to come. In the future, hash-based cryptographic systems may become an important direction for post-quantum security in blockchain. Through SNARK technology, a large number of signatures can be compressed into a single block-level proof, while supporting complex applications such as multi-signature and threshold signatures. This shift in the Ethereum Foundation's roadmap signifies that the post-quantum cryptography competition in blockchain is shifting from "designing more complex new algorithms" to "utilizing mature hash algorithms combined with novel proof technologies to achieve higher security and scalability."

Research by Binius and Flock has driven this progress. The Ethereum Foundation's post-quantum team is advancing this roadmap, which includes deploying a production-grade leanVM in 2027 and deploying it at the consensus, execution, and data processing layers in 2028. Justin Drake also stated that the increased capabilities of AI in cryptanalysis have recently dealt blows to the lattice-based solution HAWK and the related solution SQIsign, and hash-based solutions are being used for blockchain post-quantum signatures. The trend of open-source automated research is also accelerating, with SNARK.fast achieving 1.8 million BLAKE3 proofs per second.
