NEAR协议采用的是分片技术，但不是以太坊侧链，而是一条独立PoS公链，有自己的共识机制，原生的代币格式，NEAR可以视为以太坊的竞争者。

NEAR主网于2020年4月上线，由于节点数偏少，一直基于权威证明运行。9月底，基金会将控制权移交到其他节点运营商手中，实现了真正的去中心化治理。
NEAR代币的主要作用有几个：
1、NEAR是NEAR协议的原生通证，第一个作用是保障网络安全。由于运行节点需要质押NEAR代币，一旦节点作恶便可对其进行惩罚，这种机制可以有效保障网络安全。
2、交易媒介。用户在NEAR交易时需要使用NEAR作为交易媒介。
3、用于网络治理投票，以决定网络资源的分配方式以及协议未来的技术方向。

NEAR代币初始供应量为 10亿枚。 每年发行5％的额外供应以作为出块奖励，其中90％分配给验证者（总计4.5％），而10％分配给协议储备金池（总计0.5％）。30％的交易费用作为与交易交互的合约的回扣支付，其余70％被销毁。
NEAR代币的发行量不是简单的通胀，而是一种动态机制，即当交易规模到达一定程度后，NEAR将会进入通缩阶段。
