Colony 是一个可以使人们创建 DAO 的基础设施，也是一个 DAO 操作系统。说起它，就不得不提到它的历程。Colony 是 2014 年开始在以太坊上构建的首批项目之一。
在 2015 年 10 月，由蚁群间的协作带来思路，Colony 在博客上阐述了去中心化办公的想法，同年其最初的创始人 Jack du Rose 在创立社区的过程中遇到了 Collin Vine（今在 YouTube 任职），使其一起加入成为联合创始人。11 月，Jack du Rose 又携项目参加了以太坊开发者第一届大会，此时项目还处于早期。2016 年 7 月，Colony 进行了第一次升级，在 2017 年 2 月，发布了 beta 版本，12 月发布了白皮书。但是由于那时 ICO 的狂热已经达到顶峰，担心证券法规的影响，所以项目方逐渐减少了动作，直到 DAO 的逐渐兴起，才于 2019 年 12 月左右决定在 Discord 上恢复了社区。
而后团队又发布了新的白皮书，重新明确了该项目的定位。Colony 团队自身也践行着分布式办公的方法，大部分时间都是通过 Discord 进行交流。项目在去年 2 月发布了 Colony v2 版本，同年 11 月开始公募，现在才算完全落地。
在 Colony 官网显示，作为 DAO 启动器，仅需 90 秒，就可以使世界各地的人们简单轻松的在线建立自己的 DAO。
 Colony 主要功能包括：声誉系统、发行 Token、Gasless、懒惰共识机制。
声誉是组织内的重要衡量标准，衡量个人为组织的成功做出了多少贡献，当用户成功获得赏金时，就会获得声誉，通过声誉可获得一系列权益，不过声誉会随着时间的推移而衰减，这就进一步促使用户积极参与。Colony 目前的 Gas 费很低。项目称，日后 Colony 将通过「元交易」支付所有 gas。Colony 还为用户提供了「懒惰共识」机制进行治理，具体指的是发起事项后，有一定安全时间的延迟，只要没有人反对，无需投票就会自动执行事项，只有存在分歧时才需要主动投票。
除此以外 Colony 作为一个开源框架还内嵌了如支付、融资、扩展、激励、质押、安全等 20 多个组件，有众多工具可供用户选择。用户可以从中集体管理资金、做出决定，使不同人根据自身贡献来获得报酬，也可以进行收益分享、仲裁。最为重要的是，还可通过其平台与以太坊上的其他智能合约进行交互，大大的提高了用户 DAO 的扩展性。其背后逻辑相当繁琐复杂，不过 Colony 将这些 DAO 的功能形成一个个插件，集成到项目当中，使用户可以轻松一键解决。总体来说，可以利用这些不同的插件，根据组织的需要，进行 DAO 的塑造。
为 DAO 提供基础设施的项目也不在少数，如 Aragon、Moloch、DAOstack、DAOhaus 等。与 Aragon 相比，Colony 更加开放，且 gas 费极低，在之后的设计中将达到无 gas 费的地步。而 Moloch DAO 最初的目标是为以太坊基础设施提供资金支持，更适用于资助计划。DAOStack 引入了一种「全息共识」和「预测市场」的加密经济机制，使部分人有投票权，预测最应关注的事物，从而提高决策的质量和速度。与其不同的是 Colony 的「懒惰共识」机制为用户节省了麻烦的投票环节，又能从中体现众多成员的意志。
Colony 的功能虽然已经足够多，但还在不停的更新迭代，正在一步步完善 DAO 基础设施的各个方面，从中也可以看出这样的 Colony 足够支撑未来的 DAO 更为复杂的结构。
