Smart contracts are those that immediately enforce the terms of a pre-programmed condition when it is triggered, similar to the if-then statements of a computer program. The concept of smart contract has three elements: commitment, protocol and digital form, thus extending the application scope of blockchain to all aspects of transaction, payment, settlement and clearing in the financial industry.
